What are the differences between the 2 course options?
The Basics of Ophthalmology and Scribing course is a fully online self paced 10 hour introductory course. It is ideal for administrative staff in an ophthalmology office, those interested in scribing, or for anyone with a general interest in ophthalmology. The Ophthalmic Assistant course is a 6 month evening course held once a week. This course is for those who want to start work as an ophthalmic assistant or for current ophthalmic assistants and technicians who want to further their knowledge and obtain certification. Students new to the field of ophthalmology would also need clinical rotations either here with our Program in the Washington DC area or at an office they arrange themselves.
Can these programs be done fully online?
Yes! The Basics of Ophthalmology and Scribing course is a fully online course. The Ophthalmic Assistant evening course can be done fully online however there are optional in person workshops at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Clinical rotations arranged by the Program are all located in the DC area however students may instead find their own sponsorship by an local ophthalmology office for clinical experience.
What are the course costs and is financial aid available?
The 10 hour Basics of Ophthalmology and Scribing course is $250 total including course registration fee and course tuition. The 6 month once a week evening Ophthalmic Assistant course has a $75 application fee, $375 registration fee, and $3650 course tuition. Optional day time clinical rotations have an extra tuition charge of $3000. No financial aid is available for any of our courses at this time and payment is due in full upon enrollment however payment plans are available for our Ophthalmic Assistant course. After our courses, students are eligible to take national certification exams which is done through iJCAHPO – please contact them for more information on certification process and costs.
Are there are any admissions requirements?
Our courses require a high school diploma or equivalent. No other prerequisites are needed however prior healthcare background is preferred. The course applications have more details on submitting a complete application.
